(a.k.a. Paula's Occasional Blather
about Life in General)

8 February 2005

Well, here's the Fuzzy Feet I started last Tuesday at Sue's. They are warm, but they are PILLY! (Damn!) Though I enjoyed knitting with this South American yarn, I don't think I'll rush out to buy more anytime soon. I'm really disappointed with the pilling, though I cannot complain one iota about how warm and toasty my feet are in these things! Maybe I'll have a go at them with the sweater stone later, provided I can find the sweater stone.

Hard to believe I have only been free of my job for a week. It feels like a longer time. I must say, it's nice to be at home with the dogs and my stash again. Had to postpone my laundry catch-up 'til yesterday, though, because the dryer chose last Tuesday to expire. I knew something funny was up when my clothes tumbled for over six hours and were still wet. Turned out the heating element was fried, and since our pair of vintage avocado green Maytags was at least 35 years old, we decided to replace them. A new pair of nice, plain, WHITE Kenmores arrived yesterday, and I proceeded to do wash with wild abandon. About halfway through, I realized that instead of a cold rinse, I was getting a hot rinse, as the fellas from Sears had hooked the hoses up wrong. With a pair of heavy-duty pliers, I fixed the problem myself, cussing all the while. They KNEW something was wrong when they left, but -- fix it? Oh, heavens forfend! That might be -- GASP -- quality customer service! And my dear Mrs. Warner, since you were too cheap to spend over $800 on new appliances, WHAT do you expect???

All is well, right, and good NOW, but oy veh what a journey!

I washed a load of skeins for my eBay store this morning, this time a lovely medium gray flecked wool/silk blend. No photo yet, as the skeins are still drying on the rack, but methinks this one is another nice candidate for use in the Kilmainham scarf kit.

Speaking of which, I'm eager to see what progress Cindy has made on the scarf since last Tuesday!

Suzy Creemcheese, my vision-impaired rescue Corgi, is supposed to be coming to us soon, but we're having a devil of a time finding a warm enough travel date. Since dogs travel in the baggage hold, moderate temps are urgently necessary. I can't wait to skritch her big ears and rub her belly!

On Sunday, I took the "What Novel Are You?" quiz Judy had a link to on her blog, and here's what I got. Try it out! It's fun.

You're A Prayer for Owen Meany!
by John Irving
Despite humble and perhaps literally small beginnings, you inspire faith in almost everyone you know. You are an agent of higher powers, and you manifest this fact in mysterious and loud ways. A sense of destiny pervades your every waking moment, and you prepare with great detail for destiny fulfilled. When you speak, IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS!
Take the Book Quiz at the Blue Pyramid.

Needless to say, I raced right out and bought a copy of this book to read. Is it a flattering description of moi? Beats me. It's ceratinly not ACCURATE, physically speaking, since I am not a dwarf with a wrecked voice who shouts to be heard. But I'm enjoying the read. It's only the second Irving novel I've ever read, and I find I really like his style. He has me laughing at the most unlikely things. I was glad to note that the shelf at Barnes & Noble held quite a lot of his titles. I won't have to be quite so circumspect about devouring his work as I must be with Tracy Chevalier's. (HELLO TRACY...IF YOU'VE BLUNDERED INTO MY BLOG...I WANT MORE!!!!! NOW!!!!!!)

One would think, having written a few novels myself, that I would know these things cannot be rushed, but greed is kind of a natural instinct here when one has loved a book as much as I loved The Lady and the Unicorn.

Back to skein winding again. Can't wait for knitting at Sue's tonight!
