Beware of the Blog

Dunno if I love my kid, or I want to kill her. If the above pic that she took wasn't so damn FUNNY, I suppose I'd have to throttle her, but as it is...and no, I don't always look that goofy when I work with yarn. I think the yarn in question is one of my reindeer blends. I just had a little bit of this pretty blue, so am keeping it for myself, and will probably make a new pair of wristers at some point.

Here's Roisin's latest furniture trick. She climbs up the back of the couch and perches there like a mountain goat.

Am a little stuck knitting-wise. It's always like that when I have just finished a project. I have a bunch of things I could be doing, but post-project letdown stops me in my tracks. Plus after deciding I was pretty detached from writing not too long ago, The Muse began dropping by again, and I'm trying to respond to the voices as best I can. I actually wrote a good 3 pages yesterday, and it felt great to flex that particular set of muscles again.

My friend Larry (above) has just published a new book, this time an autobiography which is being billed as a rock 'n roll "Angela's Ashes." I don't know if I quite agree with that description, but it's sure a wonderful read, and you can buy it here. And the companion CD, Elvis Murphy's Green Suede Shoes, is every bit as good as I expected it to be. Larry's song "Downtown Baghdad Blues" is one of the most compelling protest songs I've heard in a long time, plus it's based on one of my favorite Irish tunes, The Minstrel Boy. One of the best things about Black 47, to my mind, is the way they wrap themselves up in a trad tune and give it a great rock and swing treatment. And the instrumentation is pretty unique. In addition to the traditional rock 'n roll guitar, drums, and bass, these guys use uillean pipes, sax, and trombone, and they are so TIGHT. What a treat it has been to get to know them in the last five years! I really can't recommend them highly enough!

New CDs from Black 47 and The Prodigals, respectively, provided a good excuse to rearrange my CD carousel. I spent a number of hours on that project yesterday, and am enjoying the new variety of songs that come up when I have the machine set on "random." It's like having my very own jukebox. It plays all day long, and you never know what is going to come up next in the rotation. Right now it's "Toad," from Cream's "Wheels of Fire." I think I may skip it, as I'm not up for 10 minutes of unaccompanied drums at the moment...

Happy Birthday, Thom. Wherever you are...
