Prepare to be amused...

My friend Barry McCabe, Irish bluesman par excellence, threw out a challenge to his Yahoo group the other day. There was a discussion about blues purism going on, and the general consensus was that any music, including (or maybe especially) blues will stagnate if it isn't always evolving in some way. Barry is working on a new album right now, and is writing yet more blues variations, and we the fans are eagerly waiting for the release! Anyhoo, he jokingly posed the question, "What if I began with 'I went to bed last night' instead of 'I woke up this morning'?" Then he sent out a potential "first verse" and suggested that we in the group continue with the theme and write our own blues song. So, here's what I came up with. The first verse is Barry's, but the rest is mine. Just dashed it off to be funny, and apparently it's gotten quite a few laughs already. Being as we're all Fiber Fiends, I thought I'd share.

A Song for Ewe

Went to bed last night
Tried to get some sleep
Kept tossin' & turnin'
So I tried counting sheep!!!!!

But it didn't get no better
'Cause they all turned into sweaters
With thousands of twisted stitches...
Look real good with some Harris Tweed britches...

Got knittin' on the brain,
Drivin' me insane,
And as long as I'm countin' sheep
I ain't gonna get me no sleep...

Knit four, purl four,
Moss stitch and cable
Sweet Jaysus, gotta drink meself under the table
Before I feel better...
No more sheep becomin' sweaters

Too much baa-loney...
Wanna be on me owney
With no more needles...
Tweedle deedle deedle
Got them sheep countin' sweater knittin' blues...

And speaking of sweater-knitting blues...I really have to get back to knitting on my Abbotts Bromley sweater for my friend, Seamus. I started it a year ago and only have a partial sleeve and most of the back done. I got sidetracked by a few other projects, and of course managed to lose most of the NOTES I'd written down for this project...[sigh]

Knitting at Sue's last night was much fun as usual, and I succumbed to temptation and bought two skeins of some new Opal sock yarn she just got. They are duplictae skeins, as one pair of socks will be for Larry Kirwan, and one will be for me. I love making socks for Larry because it's a way to give something back for all the wonderful music and poetry he has given me over the years, PLUS he likes wild colors and has small feet. I try to see that he gets one new pair a year, always some vibrant Opal colorway. (They are such a pleasure to knit!)

God help me...my CD carousel has chosen "Toad" yet again! Why does this always happen when I'm blogging? Thank goodness I'm in a better frame of mind for Ginger Baker's extended drum solo this time...
