7 April 2005
I'm back from Minnesota now, still struggling with a low-grade grogginess brought about by too many time changes in a single weekend. First, there was the gaining of an hour on Wednesday as I flew into the Central time zone. Then I lost an hour on Saturday night as Minnesota switched to good ol' DST. THEN I lost ANOTHER hour flying back to the East Coast on Monday night. Blecch. I feel like I've been very far behind the proverbial 8- ball ever since.
The sock-in-progress pictured above is made of some yummy new Opal I bought from Sue recently. Of course I bought two balls, as this pair is for Larry Kirwan, and eventually I will make a pair just like these for myself. But I realized it's nearly a year since I last gave Larry a new pair, so I've got to get cranking if I am going to have these ready in time for the next Providence show. (April 29th! Ulp!) I took this pic while at the playground in St. Paul with my sister and my great-niece, Miss Kitty. I turned the heel and started up the leg after we got back to my sister's house and Kitty settled in for a nap, so I guess I am making pretty good progress.
On Sunday and Monday we had rather incredible weather -- in the 70s both days! It was the first trip of the season to the playground, and as you can see, Kitty had a lovely time on the swing.
Back here in New England it is still sweater weather, yet I shan't complain as long as there is no more SNOW falling from the sky.
Here are some pics of my sister's cat, Claudia. I wish I had a sweater the color of Claudia. She is my favorite of my sister's four cats, so fat and gorgeous!
And here is one of those pics that happens purely by chance. I could not possibly have timed it if I was TRYING to get this particular shot. I THOUGHT I was taking a picture of Claudia lounging on her side on the table, but what I didn't realize until I looked in the preview window was that she had chosen this very moment to YAWN. Not pretty, but very funny!
I got a LOT of knitting done at my sister's, and am finally in the home stretch on Seamus' sweater. I worked on it so intensively I actually ran out of yarn and had to ply more straight away on Tuesday. I now have a generous 500 yards to work with, and hopefully that will be enough to finish the job. (If not, I have LOTS more I can ply...) I'm pleased with the way it's coming out so far, but will not post a picture until it's assembled, blocked, and dry.
I did some modest stash enhancement while in Minnesota, and visited Three Kittens, The Yarnery, Creative Fibers, and Clickety Sticks. Mostly, I bought books and patterns, but there were a couple of sock yarns I couldn't leave behind, of course, and I also bought some more colors of Cushing dye, and some GORGEOUS fingering weight Shetland stuff. Yes, a modest haul, BUT with my clothing, works-in-progress, and a spinning wheel, my suitcase weighed 63 pounds on the return trip and I got socked with a Heavy Baggage charge! Considering the fact that I did not spin much -- 2 skeins, just so I could say I hadn't brought the wheel for nothing -- I think I will NOT travel with a spinning wheel again. OR I will pack my big canvas tote and put my less valuable baggage -- i.e dirty laundry -- in THAT for the return trip. Northwest offered me a PLASTIC BAG for this purpose, so I wouldn't have to pay the carrying charge, but I could not imagine putting my new STASH in a mere plastic bag! Too much potential for irreparable damage, if you ask me, so I paid the $25. Priorities are priorities, what can I say?
Now to begin thinking about what sorts of yarns to put in the store for spring and summer...
